Hand tattoos have a very rich history.  Tribal clans started to use them to identify each other, originally.  Over the generations, though, they began to be used by prisoners.  Then, young boys began to get them as a way to show off how macho they were to the girls.  Soon the trend expanded so that boys began getting skulls and crosses tattooed on their arms, instead of just getting tattoos on their hands.  Even the military took to getting patriot tattoos on their hands.  Why the hands?  Well, the hands are one of the most constantly visible parts of the body.  People can always see them, so they really make a statement.
